“Imitation is Suicide”

“Envy is ignorance, imitation is suicide” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

I heard this quote once in a movie and I could not get it out of my head. For some reason I kept wondering what it truly meant and then I began to see it in aspects of my life. Living in a world with so many creative and talented people, millions of ideas are constantly being born. But not all of them are original. So why is it that some people feel the need to imitate?

Is it fear of rejection? Fear of failure? I do not have the answer to this question. Sure, I have imitated things in my life. Sometimes my photo ideas are based off of the newest Free People catalog or I base something off of an idea I saw on Instagram. Whatever the case, there is nothing wrong with being inspired by others and then making it your own. Fashion does this all the time. What is old can be made new again and often designers do this by looking to the past. Remember those lovely platform shoes worn in the 70’s? Well their baaack, but now with more straps, prettier colors, and new materials. I wouldn’t mind a pair for myself, but that’s another story for another day. The point like i mentioned earlier is it’s okay to take inspiration and make it into your own. But when a person blatantly copies something original, that is when imitation becomes suicide.

You are no longer being true to yourself or your original thoughts, you are killing your ideas. I firmly believe God has granted each of us with beautiful gifts and talents that we get to use and improve on each day. When you imitate someone else, you are stealing their gifts, their beautiful ideas God has blessed them with. You have become the proud “new” owner of a stolen idea. Now why would you want that?

Nowadays with technology it’s so easy to create and so many ideas are out there floating around that the “imitators” are hardly noticed. Unless you are the one being imitated. But if you are reading this and you feel that anything I have said pertains to you, do not fret. You have your entire life ahead of you to get out there and create your own wonderfully amazing stuff! Never worry about what people may think or say because you’re not creating for them, you’re creating for you. You are doing exactly what God placed you on this Earth to do and if it fulfills you and brings happiness to your life, then you’ve done it right. So remember this: Don’t be a knock-off, be an original, be true to yourself, and your ideas will flow beautifully out of you like stardust.
